This site is about relationships — the relationship of time, events, place, context, and economy to interiors. I demonstrate these relationships in two ways: with examples from the past which give historical context to the decorative arts, and with material and finish selections from products that are available to us now. I’ve had fun with the later by imagining the client or scenario and selecting suitable materials and finishes.

I’m an interior designer and “armchair decorative arts historian.” I have a BA in Art History from UC Davis and an Interior Design Certificate from UCLA Extension. The Deirdre Designs site allows me to indulge in my love of research — the properties, characteristics, performance, and applications of materials, and the historical context of our interiors and furnishings.
